Influence
The Great God Pan (1894) fixed a pattern of the 1890s: a scientific or occult experiment tears a veil, and something older than Christianity walks in London. The book’s decadent notoriety and its pagan-survival theme feed Robert W. Chambers’s forbidden play in The King in Yellow and, later, Lovecraft’s accounts of knowledge that damages the knower. Later folk horror still works from Machen’s map.
